THE MISKATONIC INSTITUTE OF HORROR STUDIES ANNOUNCES FALL 2023 SEMESTER OF CLASSES

With our Autumn 2023 semester, The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies sees a change in management and a renewed commitment to making Miskatonic the best it can be, and as accessible as possible. In-person classes will continue in London, UK, while in the US we pivot to a fully online program overseen by Claire Donner, formerly of our New York branch. Students can still look forward to joining us at special in-person events, like our ongoing collaborations with the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival; keep an eye on our social media channels to see what kinds of surprises we’ll have in store!

Please note that our livestream classes will be running at a different time slot with the aim of being more internationally inclusive. We will also offer streamed recordings for a limited time after each live lecture, in case you have to miss us. We appreciate our community for sticking with us through this shapeshifting phase as we continue to investigate the best way to bring our Online classes to as many people as we can reach, on the best possible platform.

As mentioned above, London will maintain its exclusively live, in-person classes. For a variety of reasons we will not be streaming or recording these events. But lucky Londoners can catch some fantastic lectures this season, from Ferocious Fathers, to those pesky Children of the Stones. We’ll dive in on the troubled relationship between the Great Beast himself, Aleister Crowley and his good buddy Dennis Wheatley, and finally we’ll go Down Under for some Australian Gothic.

Behind the scenes, we’re overjoyed to welcome Brandon Cronenberg, Dan Martin, Stacey Abbott and Prano Bailey-Bond, Amy Searles to our Advisory Board, who alongside Heidi Honeycutt and Alexandra Heller-Nicholas will help to guide us through the darkest corners of the Horror Genre.

We look forward to seeing you and hearing from you.

FALL 2023 CLASSES

MISKATONIC LONDON
Branch Director: Josh Saco

For Miskatonic London’s Autumn Semester, admission to individual classes is £9 concession, £12 advance, & £15 door. A full semester pass is £40. All classes take place live at The Horse Hospital, Colonnade, Bloomsbury, London. These are not live streamed.

Starting on the 12th September, London has a whirlwind of lectures, covering the dubious history of Aleister Crowley and Dennis Wheatley with Phil Baker, biographer of our forgotten occult past. Fast forwarding to that particularly British phenomenon that hung over the 70s like a curse, we explore Generation Hexed, with a special focus on Children of the Stones. November sees us getting paternal as we explore the 70s troubled relationship with the on screen father in Ferocious Fatherhood. Finally in December, we’ll keep you warm with Australian Gothic.

MISKATONIC ONLINE
Branch Director: Claire Donner

Online branch classes will first broadcast live on Zoom; within 24 hours, the lecture will be made available on our Vimeo channel for 72 hours for anyone who could not make the initial Live Stream. We are working very hard at coming up with the best possible way of making our entire archive available for online viewing. We are hoping to have this ready in the early part of 2024.

Individual tickets for the Online Classes will be £10. An Online Semester pass will be available for the full semester of live broadcasts at £35.

“While I will miss the community we formed at Film Noir Cinema in Brooklyn, I am thrilled to expand my horizons as Miskatonic’s new Online Branch Director. The love of the horror connects people from all walks of life and countries of origin, and it is my great honor to maintain a space for international audiences to gather and celebrate our favorite genre. I only hope I can do my predecessor Shelagh Rowan-Legg proud! We have a killer semester coming up, starting with a deep dive into the historical inspiration for films such as THE FURY and PHENOMENA, featuring science experiments on psychic savants; then we’ll go back in time for a course on the function of faith in the folkloric horror of SLEEPY HOLLOW, in a talk that has been ten years in the making. We’ll take a fresh look at the maternal horror of movies like THE EXORCIST and THE SHINING through the lens of fashion, and finally we’ll descend into the depths of Hell itself for an examination of Catholicism’s enduring influence on the horror genre. This semester will be a strong start for me personally, and as I continue to steward the Online Branch in the future, I look forward to bringing together viewers and voices from all around the world.”
