AUTUMN 2025 CLASSES

MISKATONIC LONDON
Branch Director: Josh Saco

This year has been a rough one for many folks. It’s been a rather hectic one to pull together, and I’m really pleased with Miskationic’s programme this semester. I always am, but it’s so satisfying when you can bring this multi headed beast under control.

Recently we lost a silent partner of the Miskatonic family: Roger K Burton, founder of the Horse Hospital, a true legend and an incomprehensible influence on youth and alternative pop culture since the mid-70s.
If you wore it or liked it, chances are Roger had a hand in it.

You can (and should) read a proper obituary here. For my part, Roger saw what Miskatonic had to offer and chose to support it, venues in London are difficult to come by, open minded artistic venues in central London are even harder to come by. He gave us a home, and he continues to do so.

He fought valiantly to defend the Horse Hospital as an outsider art venue, holding the line against an invading army of Tories, capitalists, and landlords, even in the darkest hours. Roger himself was unassuming and humble; you’d never guess he was once mistakenly arrested as a suspected member of the Baader–Meinhof Group.

I am blessed to have known him, and honoured to continue Miskatonic at the Horse Hospital.

On a brighter note, I’m delighted to welcome film writer and animator Danielle Burgos aboard the good ship Miskatonic IHS. Danielle will be co-presenting our online sessions—I can’t wait for you all to meet her and see what treasures she dredges up from the depths.

And so we sail into a new autumn. The leaves scatter across the cobbles, the foggy mornings roll in, and the nights draw long and hazy. We face the season ahead not knowing what horrors await; beginning in late September with the genre-defining Shoegaze Horror. From there, we descend into the underground, scurry among the dusty mice, and unearth the Folklore of the London Underground.

We’ll stay close to our beloved Quatermass as we explore the long arm of Nigel Kneale’s prescient Gothic Television, before closing the semester with a little festive cheer – comparing and contrasting representations of gendered on-screen rage.

And who knows… there may be another fun surprise in the works.

So grab yourself a Semester Pass, and I’ll see you down the front!

For Miskatonic’s Autumn London Semester, admission to individual classes remains at £9 concession, £12 advance & £15 door. A full semester pass is £40. All classes take place live at The Horse Hospital, Colonnade, Bloomsbury, London. These are not live streamed.

MISKATONIC ONLINE
Branch Co-Directors: Claire Donner & Danielle Burgos

The long, scorching summer of this pre-apocalyptic year is finally winding down, giving way at last to the welcome chill of spooky season — which means it’s back to school for our beloved Miskatonic students. This Fall term will be one for the books, with bittersweet moments, bright surprises, and lessons in terror you won’t soon forget.

Miskatonic’s Online branch kicks things off with a bang (pun intended), with an event we call “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About NEKROMANTIK (But Were Afraid to Ask).” This live conversation with notorious auteur Jörg Buttgereit will wade into the murky waters of his groundbreaking work, discussing the context and inspiration behind his shocking early films, and tracing his surprising trajectory into television, comics, and theater. Miskatonic is very proud to offer this unique opportunity to interrogate one of horror history’s most radical figures; when they say “They don’t make’em like that anymore,” they are talking about Jörg Buttgereit.

“Of course, the thrills won’t stop with our celebrity guest this Fall. In October, we welcome back Miskatonic alum Adam Nayman with his canny analysis of hypnotism in horror cinema, and November features author Erica Shultz, whose talk draws from her fabulously boundary-pushing book The Sweetest Taboo: An Unapologetic Guide to Child Kills In Film. Then, we’ll wrap things up in December when Professor Julia Echeverría charts the viral spread of the eerily-real “epidemic cinema” subgenre.”

In addition to these internet offerings, Miskatonic NYC survivors may find some opportunities for meatspace meetups at a few special events around town…just stay tuned to our social media channels for details.

On a personal note, this semester will be a poignant one for me, as it is my last with The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies. At the end of 2025, I will pass the torch to my esteemed colleague Danielle Burgos, a critic and programmer with whom I am extremely honored to share the Online branch Co-Director title this Fall. While I am excited to see where Danielle takes Miskatonic in 2026 and beyond, I will greatly miss this uniquely wonderful organization as I pursue new projects and passions. I’m sure I will join you all on the other side of the lectern in the near future, and I encourage you to stay in touch. It has been a pleasure having me in class.

And introducing:

Danielle Burgos is a dessert and film enthusiast living in New York City. She’s written for Metrograph Journal, Screen Slate, BOMB Magazine, EndCrawl, Downtime, and other outlets, and programmed films at Spectacle, Alamo Drafthouse, and Anthology Film Archives. She has a bad habit of seeing the third film in a series long before the first.
